Rabun County is located in northeast Georgia and bordered by both North Carolina and South Carolina. Our county seat, Clayton, is located at the major regional intersection of Highway 441 and Highway 76. Life in Rabun County includes moderate temperatures and above-normal rainfall. Our average low temperature is in the 40s and our average high temperature is in the low 70s. We are one of the wettest counties in the state, with almost double the average 48-inch annual rainfall average in Georgia.
The county encompasses about 371 square miles, most of which is either national forest, one of our three state parks, or Georgia Power land. This protection limits our developable area but also protects our natural beauty.
Our population has grown in recent years but remains predominantly white. However, our proportion of blacks and Hispanics continues to rise.
The median housing price rose by over 70 percent between 1990 and 2000, signifying a clear increase in propertyalues in Rabun County. However, our rate of homeowner remains high.
